Hope in the Light of Day: A Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemoration @ Downtown RiverMarket

The Family Justice Center of Ouachita Parish is hosting a Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemoration.  This year’s theme, “Hope in the Light of Day”, highlights the Coordinated Community Response efforts of the Ouachita Parish SAFE Task Force as it strives to promote victim safety and batterer accountability.  Open to the public. Domestic violence literature is available including DV Fact Sheets, brochures, and DV Handbooks.

Allen Parish Balloon Release and Survivor Celebration @ Allen Parish Council on Aging

Allen Parish balloon release is Oct. 10th 10:00 am at the Allen Parish Council on Aging. We will also celebrate survivors of domestic violence with a small reception immediately following the Allen Parish balloon release.

Oasis will host a run/walk from Vinton’s Sheriff’s Substation to Lake Charles Civic Center is on Oct. 12th the run will begin at 6:00 am and end approx. 4:30 pm.

Flowers on the Lake – Lake Charles @ Lake Charles Civic Center Seawall

Oct. 29th at 5:30 pm at the Civic Center Seawall Oasis will recognize those who have lost their lives due to domestic violence, we will have a speaker, singing and a memorial.

Purple Balloon Release: A DVAM High School Event @ TBA

“Purple Balloon Release” is the culminating event for the Dollars for Domestic Violence fundraiser for high school students within Ouachita Parish. The high school raising the most funds releases the Purple Balloons at their campus. This event is hosted each October by the Family Justice Center of Ouachita Parish.

“Dollars for Domestic Violence” is an awareness fundraiser for high school students within Ouachita Parish. Students purchase domestic violence ribbon cards for one dollar to Say No to Domestic Violence. Students pledge to help raise awareness of domestic and teen dating violence.

Pennies for Peace Live Butterfly Release: A DVAM Elementary School Event @ TBA

The LIVE BUTTERFLY RELEASE is the culminating event for the winners of the Pennies for Peace elementary school domestic violence awareness and fundraising project. The winning school will release live butterflies followed by a pizza party for the winning class in honor of safe families. This event is hosted each October by the Family Justice Center of Ouachita Parish.

Pennies for Peace is an elementary school awareness project in which schools compete using purple piggy banks  to collect coins to help local children and their families in Northeast Louisiana receive domestic violence services.  Age-appropriate materials are provided for parents to review with students at home.  Teachers and counselors are provided with resource and referral information. This event provides a positive experience in addressing a community problem that affects many children. Special recognition of winning school /class plus a $100.00 gift card drawing in which all participating schools are eligible to win.
